Capoeira traces its origins through the experiences of enslaved Africans and Indigenous communities in Brazil. As such, it upholds principles of resilience, resistance, and adaptability. For descendants of the transatlantic slave trade, embracing Afro-Brazilian cultural forms like Capoeira serves as a means of reconnecting with an ancestry disrupted by the Atlantic slave trade. Capoeira provides an essential space for individuals to explore and celebrate their cultural identities, both within and outside the African diaspora. That intercultural exchange is central to human growth and potential.
Grupo Unidade, "group unity", Capoeira was found in 2005 in Cleveland, Ohio's Tremont neighborhood and represents a wide range of people. Our academy draws individuals from throughout the world. We build unity by working across constructs of class, race, disability and gendered difference. What’s more, members frequently attend events with their families. Children take workshops with their parents, and grandparents attend as guests.
